Delaware Country Club History

Delaware Country Club celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 2010! Founded in 1910 as the area's first private golf course, Delaware has developed over the past century into one of the premier facilities in the State of Indiana, becoming the first to receive USGA certifications in 2003.

Located just off SR 32, on Country Club Road, the Club has a rich history and tradition. Built on just over 100 acres of land on the eastern border of the Muncie city limits, Delaware's founding membership included some of the most famous names in local business and industry including the Ball family, and other notables such as Kitsleman, Johnson, Kimbrough, Broderick, Maxon and Galliher.

The original site considered for Delaware CC was the present day site of Ball Memorial Hospital near the campus of Ball State University in Muncie. Eventually, property was acquired to the east side of Muncie to accommodate the population base that resided from downtown and points east. The east side location was considered ideal at that time given the immediate location to downtown and access to S.R. 67 which back in those days was considered a super highway.

Course designer Arthur Lockwood supervised the original nine-hole layout at DCC as well as the expansion to eighteen holes, which took place prior to 1920. Hole names of Long John, Haw Row and Despair where among those that greeted early members of Delaware's challenging course. The Club's first ever tournament was held on Oct. 15th, 1921.

The Clubhouse and pool were added in the 1930's and have since undergone several renovations and improvements over the years.

In the mid 1960's, the first modern irrigation system was added to the course. However, other than re-routing of several holes and the addition of new tee boxes, the original layout and design were virtually the same for the first 70 years.

In 1983, a new pro shop was completed and the current course routing was put into place that still exists today. In 1989, the first USGA slope rating was obtained for all of the existing tee stations and the DCC course became the first in Delaware County to receive USGA certification in 2003. In addition, the irrigation system was upgraded to a triple row system in 2003.

In 2004, nationally renowned course designer Tim Liddy completed a four-phase upgrade that included improvements to drainage, irrigation, bunkering, and 6 re-shaped greens.

Today, Delaware Country Club continues to offer it's members the finest golfing experience in the region including the area's premier 18-hole golf course, full practice facilities, and a fully stocked pro shop led for the past two decade's by Tom Harris, the 2006 Indiana PGA Professional of the Year.

Delaware also offers superior amenities including a full service club house, fine dining and banquet facilities, swimming pool, men's and ladies private locker rooms, and a dedicated and talented staff who are committed to providing the best service, food and experience possible for every member and their families.
